Greetings!

Our oven door makes a tiny squeak each time someone opens it, first a low sound then a higher one as it snaps back shut. These chilly days, we're hearing it more frequently, impatient as we are for delicious warm treats to be ready for tasting.

This month we've found a couple of traditional recipes, just the sort of thing to bake on a lazy afternoon. The Marsala Wine Cookies make dessert easy. All you need for a light dessert is strong coffee and fresh clementines. The yeasty Frangipane Streusel Coffeecake is for more serious snacking. (You might even want to make it to serve at a Superbowl party.)

FROM OUR RECIPE BOX - Frangipane Apricot Streusel Coffeecake
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Frangipane Coffeecake The tradition of eating yeast bread coffeecakes reached American shores along with European immigrants who migrated here in the 18th and 19th centuries. What better nosh for a frontiersman than a bracing cup of strong coffee and a generous slice of sweet yeasty bread and fruit?
The base of this coffeecake is a simple and forgiving sweet yeast dough. It is covered with a rich almond filling then topped with tart apricots. A crumbly coating of almond streusel gives it a finished appearance. We like to bake this coffeecake in one large round pan, ideal for a family gathering or buffet. (Or bake it in on a baking sheet or in 2 smaller pans.) Few of us can claim a day of rugged physical labor that starts before dawn. Still, a slightly sweet fruit and almond- cream-filled bread sounds just right to ward off the winter chill.
Marsala Wine Cookies
Our files are filled with hundreds of recipes we yearn to try like this easy to make buttery wine cookie. We like the way that the Marsala and lemon flavors blend, great for dunking in coffee or a glass of sweet wine after dinner. (Sherry or orange juice would make a good substitute for the Marsala.) If you prefer a less pronounced lemon flavor, omit the lemon zest.
