For those of us locked up north, February is a dreary month. Dull skies and acres of snow make spring unimaginable. But in the Central Valley of California, there is rebirth. Almond trees begin their splendorous seasonal display of pastel blossoms about mid-month.

To flee winter, you might want to book a flight to Sacramento and follow the Merced County blossom trail. For those of us toughing it out at home, we’re offering two of our current favorite recipes.

California Almond Blossom Tours

Almonds in Bloom

Almonds thrive in the central valley of California, an area that stretches 500 miles from Bakersfield north to Red Bluff. Called "the greatest garden in the world", the Central Valley produces 25% of the food Americans eat. Almonds rank sixth among California's agricultural products.

In Merced County, about 1 hour SE of San Francisco, almond trees bloom around the last week in February. (Warm weather is causing an earlier bloom this year.) A drive through the almond growing areas during the bloom is magical. Acres of almonds and other stone fruit blanketed in white blossoms can be viewed along major freeways and back roads alike. King Arthur Takes Baking Education On The Road Again

FROM OUR RECIPE BOX - Lemon Poppy Seed Pound Cake
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lemon Poppy Seed Cake

We wanted an easy-to-make butter cake rich with poppy seeds. Lemon has an affinity for poppy and this cake is packed with lemon zest. The loaf brings to mind the warmth of an Eastern European coffee house. With its rich, tender crumb, this loaf is ideal served with a cup of freshly brewed coffee or tea.

Cinnamon Filled Scone

Cinnamon Schmear dresses up these buttery, flaky scones. Almond or Chocolate Schmear would make a wonderful variation. (How about baking a batch of Layered Chocolate Scones for Valetine's Day breakfast?) If you do not want to glaze the scones, simply sprinkle them with sugar before baking.
